PSG IN OMINOUS FORM

Paris Saint-Germain looked fearsome as they overcame a spirited Lyon side 4-0; Lille scored the only away win of the round to stay in second; Bastia’s Mickaël Landreau celebrated his 602nd Ligue 1 appearance with a win.The top of the table may look the same as it did going into Week 15, the top four sides all recording wins, but it was the way that Paris Saint-Germain toppled a combative Lyon side at the Parc des Princes on Sunday night that made them look stronger title favourites than ever.

Tactical tweak pays off

For the first half-hour, OL did as well, if not better, than any other side has in the capital this season. Rémi Garde’s men pressed hard, stifled PSG in the middle of the park and looked the goods to take a shock lead when Aléxandre Lacazette smashed a shot onto the bar. But an astute tactical move from Laurent Blanc – inverting his midfield triangle to have two holding midfielders – sparked a ferocious turnaround.Edinson Cavani struck the opener with a glancing header minutes later (36′), Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck from the spot five minutes after that (41′, pen.) and captain Thiago Silva bagged his first Ligue 1 goal (60′) to mercilessly put down OL’s rebellion. Ibrahimovic added a fourth, again with a penalty, seven minutes from time to round out the thumping win and go top of the scorers chart with 11 goals (83′, pen.).

Kaká: “I was waiting for Stephan El Shaarawy and Mario Balotelli to arrive”

Kaká has admitted he was waiting for support before netting the third in Milan’s 3-1 at Catania.Goals from Riccardo Montolivo and Mario Balotelli had cancelled out Lucas Castro’s opener, before the Brazilian struck.“I’m happy with the goal,” noted Kaká, as reported by Football Italia. “In reality though, I was waiting for Stephan El Shaarawy and Mario Balotelli to arrive.“I wanted to pass them the ball, but they didn’t arrive and I shot instead to score my 99th goal.”Kaká now has four goals in eleven appearances this term.
His strike at the Stadio Angelo Massimino was his third in eight days, having also netted against Genoa and Celtic. The 31 year-old, however, is just happy to win.“I’m very happy that I’m able to play well and that the team wins,” he continued. “It was an important game for us.”Having been sold to Real Madrid in June 2009 for €68.5 million, Kaká rejoined Milan on a free transfer in August.

ALABA EXTENDS UNTIL 2018

Zimbabwean club side, Highlanders beat How Mine 3-0 to lift the major Cup (Mbada Diamonds Cup) in the top flight league on Saturday 30 November. Goals from Njabulo Ncube, Peter Moyo and Masimba Mambare ensured that the Bulawayo based side atones for the disappointment of losing the championship on goal difference for the second time in a row to arch rivals Dynamos.
Highlanders might have won the Mbada Diamonds Cup but due to a CAF 3 year ban “Bosso” will not be able to compete in the 2014 Confederation Cup and instead How Mine will take that place and compete in the 2014 continental club competition. How Mine had reached the final on the back of some “giant slaying” streak but found Highlanders in no mood to be added to that list. How Mine knocked out league champions Dynamos and CAPS United on the way to the final but had to settle for the runners –up check of US $90 000 while Highlanders pocket US $130 000 for the win.

Samir Nasri struck twice as Manchester City

Samir Nasri struck twice as Manchester City moved into third in the Premier League with victory over Swansea.Alvaro Negredo scored an early 25-yard free-kick but Swansea were on top in the first half as Costel Pantilimon saved from Jonjo Shelvey, and Jonathan De Guzman fired over from 12 yards. Those misses proved costly as Nasri steered in after a mazy run.The France midfielder then finished Pablo Zabaleta’s low cross and was inches from hitting a hat-trick.Nasri’s second was Manchester City’s 29th home goal this season and helped maintain their 100% home league record.Manuel Pellegrini’s side sit two points behind second-placed Chelsea, who beat Southampton, and six points adrift of leaders Arsenal. And although they were not at their fluent best against an impressive Swansea team, who controlled large parts of the game, they will be happy to remain in touch with the title contenders before hosting the Gunners on 14 December.

Before then, the 2012 Premier League champions face trips to West Brom and Southampton, games in which they will hope to improve on an away record that has produced only four points this season.Swansea were without injured strikers Michu and Wilfried Bony and at times it showed as they chased a first win at Manchester City since 1951.Pellegrini’s side put six unanswered goals past Tottenham last week, but it was the visitors who dominated midfield possession in the first half at the Etihad, in addition to shackling the hosts’ attacking full-backs Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta. After Negredo curled his free-kick into the top corner for his 12th of the season, Shelvey twice tested Manchester City goalkeeper Pantilimon – back in the side after Joe Hart was preferred in the midweek Champions League victory over Viktoria Plzen. The giant Romanian had to use all of his reach to deny the Swansea midfielder, whose second shot from nearly 30 yards was superbly tipped around the post.
Sergio Aguero had another shot stopped by Gerhard Tremmel in the Swans’ goal, before Martin Demichelis headed the resulting corner onto the crossbar – but compared with Swansea, the hosts looked ponderous in midfield. The visitors then had a decent penalty appeal turned down when Demichelis appeared to pull Pablo Hernandez’s shirt and they should have equalised just before the break. The impressive Shelvey cut in from the right and slipped the ball through to De Guzman, but the Dutchman fired over from 12 yards with only Pantilimon to beat.Aguero was guilty of a similar miss for the hosts after the break when he ran the ball out of play rather than shoot, but the game looked safer once Nasri ran onto Yaya Toure’s pass, rounded the sliding Ashley Williams and steered the ball in.

The Swans were less effective after that, and Aguero was twice denied before Nasri grabbed his second, this time finding the bottom corner from Zabaleta’s cross.Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini: “I’m very pleased because we won against a very difficult team, especially when they had possession, we didn’t play very well in the first half but in second we scored two goals and had more chances.”Costel Pantilimon did very well, he didn’t have too much work but when he needed to be there he really did well.”Swansea boss Michael Laudrup: “Our tactics before the game were to try and keep the ball and we played a good first half but you could see some of their players need a split-second to turn the game around.”It’s strange to lose 3-0 when we have done some many good things. That’s the difference between having good players like we have and maybe the world-class players that play for them.”

ZLATAN DOUBLE AS PSG QUASH LYON REBELLION

Despite an aggressive start from OL, Paris Saint-Germain wrested back control as Edinson Cavani (36′), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (41′, pen., 83′, pen.) and Thiago Silva (60′) scored to clinch a 4-0 home win on Sunday night.
 Paris Saint-Germain 4 – 0 Olympique Lyonnais
Can anyone stop Paris Saint-Germain this season? The question has to be asked after Lyon’s spirited first half-hour gave way to complete domination from the league leaders, for whom all three of their FIFA Ballon d’Or nominees got on the scoresheet in their third 4-0 win in four home games.
With a five-man backline, two holding midfielders and playmakers Yoann Gourcuff and Clément Grenier supporting striker Aléxandre Lacazette, Rémi Garde’s men looked to pile the pressure on early, and had Lacazette finished his fine solo effort with a goal – rather than crashing his shot off Salvatore Sirigu’s bar (27′) – things could have been much different.
Blanc pulls the strings
However, in response to Lyon’s highly effective pressing game in midfield, PSG boss Laurent Blanc inverted his midfield triangle just after the half-hour mark, pulling Marco Verratti back alongside Thiago Motta and leaving Javier Pastore – making just his second start since late September – to get forward and feed the front three.
The change paid almost immediate dividends as PSG found more space and moved higher up the pitch. Ibrahimovic was the first to threaten, with Milan Bisevac blocking his initial effort before Rémy Vercoutre turned his follow-up wide (35′), but the PSG fans didn’t have long to wait for the opener as Cavani bagged his tenth of the season with a superb glancing header from the resulting corner, sent into the near post by the in-form Lucas (36′).
Cavani in the thick of it
The Uruguayan’s effort, which squeezed past Grenier and nutmegged Gourcuff on the line, was a portent of things to come as the champions kept their foot on the gas. Just five minutes later, a vintage slide-rule pass from Pastore bisected the OL defence and put Cavani clean through.
The on-rushing Vercoutre brought Cavani down as the fleet-footed striker looked to take a touch around him, and Ibrahimovic gleefully stepped up to the spot to convert the resulting penalty with a chipped finish more or less down the middle to go level on ten goals with Cavani (41′).
It was an impressive turnaround after a somewhat nervy beginning, and the hosts never looked back as their quality shone through in the second term. PSG may have conceded more possession to OL in the early stages after the break as they adjusted to Blaise Matuidi’s coming on for the injured Thiago Motta, but on the hour-mark they went further in front – from yet another set piece.
Thiago Silva opens his account
Brazilian captain Thiago Silva used his aerial prowess to get his head to Lucas’s corner, but when his blocked effort fell invitingly, he showed that he is no slouch with his feet either, blasting home from close range to put the result beyond doubt with his first Ligue 1 goal (60′).
Lyon, who had come into the match buoyed by their mid-week qualification for the Europa League’s last 16, seemed at a loss as to how to deal with their hosts’ domination and in an effort to reproduce the pressure from earlier in the match, Garde replaced playmakers Grenier and Gourcuff with the more industrious Gaël Danic and Jordan Ferri (71′).
Ibra clinches it
However, just ten minutes later Ibrahimovic raced into the area on the end of a slick through-pass from Lucas and after he was brought down by a clumsy tackle from Samuel Umtiti, the Swede bagged his second from the spot to go clear atop the scorers chart with 11 goals and seal the 4-0 win.
PSG thus retained their four-point lead ahead of second-placed Lille – while also stretching their unbeaten run to 36 matches in all competitions – ahead of their Week 16 trip to Evian on Wednesday night. Lyon meanwhile slipped from seventh to tenth ahead of the visit of Toulouse on Thursday night.
